Michael Geist (University of Ottawa's guru on intellectual property/privacy in the digital world) has put together this nice commentary on the alleged "piracy haven" that Canada is reported to be.

  1. I really like Michael Geist's articles, although I sometimes disagree with him.  I personally feel that lobby groups like the motion picture and music industry have lots of influence in Ottawa.  Yet, as is mentioned, actual data about counterfieting is scarce and seems over reported. Yet the push towards DRM and harsher penalties continue.

IMHO - Perhaps this is not a piracy problem but a value problem.  I am willing to pay a certain amount of money to go watch a movie in a theatre, but at the current cost of a ticket, and popcorn - it is just ridiculous.  And if the quality of the movie is just another action film with the same Hollywood storyline, in the end what is it really worth.
