Who am I?

A semi-retired educator. I used to work for the TDSB as Coordinator for ICT (although I am not sure if it was just "IT" at the time!)

I also work for OISE as Principal for AQ courses:
- Computers in the Classroom (name to be changed in the next 5 years!)
- Computer Science
- Business Studies

I teach a course called Design Thinking and Problem Solving in the Classroom as an optional course to people going through the Initial Teacher Education program as well.

I have a great interest in how organizational structures are growing that are counter "pyramid" systems, e.g. Open Source, OLPC project etc. I have been working on a "physical" model of how they look based on a geodesic sphere. One of these days I will open up the web site I am creating where I share all this plus my SPICE open-ended problem solving and opportunity development model - coming soon!

Finally I have a small company and work with another retired ICT Coordinator assisting people who are close to retirement and who need to know "what happens".

Oh, and then there is my volunteer work!

Interests

computers, Design, flying, GPS, sailing, thinking

Company / Institution

OISE

Main Skills

design thinking, Powerpoint, researching

I have often noticed that all subjects have been growing so much in the last 10 yrs that someone might even imagine that if each was the only subject in the curriculum all students could still learn everything about life.

Has any subject actually REMOVED anything? Can each keep growing in a finite day?

Here is a different perspective being tried.

Although some of this report is Euro-centric the majority is from everywhere and anywhere in the world. It brings together things that are happening in a wide range of fields but with a focus on education which is why I find it useful.

It may be of interest if you want to try and keep up (catch up?) - do I hear "to dream the impossible dream . . . "?

Here is the May edition of the BECTA report.

A short version of the contents:

    Networking and wireless
Multimedia (including Analysis: Handheld games consoles in education)
    Hardware (including robots in education)
Software and internet (including ICT to improve parental engagement: towards online reporting

Came across this report in a Globe article - may be useful to anyone who feels some changes re. our perceptions of new technologies require research evidence to make others understand the impact of those devices on learning.

A taste:

Having considered the evidence I believe we need to move from a discussion about the
media ‘causing’ harm to one which focuses on children and young people, what they
bring to technology and how we can use our understanding of how they develop to
empower them to manage risks and make the digital world safer.

Enjoy! Safer Children in a Digital World
