commun-IT.org was founded on a "gift economy" philosophy towards the open sharing of educational ideas and resources. A community focused site such as this is driven by its users. The best way to get the most from this site is to also contribute to it. If you haven't already, register for an account (free) and get involved. If you don't have the time right now, you are still welcome to browse the public resources that are available such as the Wiki.

Under the hood, commun-IT.org is powered by a number of open-source web technologies that make it possible to bring users together online. The site is assembled on top of "LAMP" (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) technology for speed and reliability. In addition to this basic framework the following user tools are available to help you collaborate with your peers...

  • ELGG, a community social networking tool for personal learning environments is the heart of the site. Instead of "MySpace", think of it as "OurSpace" for educators.
  • A powerful wiki engine is integrated with your account, making it easy to collabratively author documents.
  • A shared web resource bookmarking system, structured around the Ontario Curriculum, is also included.

Additional tools can (and will) be made available over time as the community grows and needs are identified.
